- VINEYARD NOTES: The weather was excellent in 2022, the dry winter was followed by a summer with mild temperatures. A heat wave over Labor Day kicked harvest in to high gear.
Yields were on the lighter side due to smaller clusters and berries, but otherwise, the vintage was very high quality. It was a bit unusual because of the condensed ripening of all of the different varieties at once.
The grapes from the Olive Block were hand harvested in the cool morning hours and carefully sorted in the vineyard. Once the grapes arrived at the winery, they were sorted a second time prior to being lightly destemmed, retaining mostly whole berries.
After a 3 day cold soak in an open-topped fermenter, the lot was inoculated and punched down 2-3 times a day for 10 days. On completion of fermentation, the wine was pressed, then aged in a mixture of new and used French oak barrels for 10 months prior to bottling. - WINE MAKER: Julia Iantosca
- TASTING NOTES: Always the most intense of our block wines, the 2021 Olive Block holds true to that tradition. While showing classic Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel black cherry fruit, it delivers a nuanced claret-like impression as well. Deep, rich berry fruit aromas intertwine with notes of all-spice and a hint of olive and white mushroom. The richness continues in the mouth, lush fruit pairs seamlessly with supple tannins and hints of toasty oak.
- WINE STYLE: Full bodied.
- PAIRING SUGESTIONS: The rich fruitiness and spicy undertones of Old Vine Zinfandel enhance smoky and savory flavors in grilled and barbecued dishes. Its medium-to-full body and smooth tannins can stand up to hearty meats and cheeses, while its touch of sweetness beautifully offsets spiced or tangy foods.
